2023 CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest

Published 5/5/2023

The Akron Section of the ACS hosted an illustrated poem contest in celebration of Earth Week that encouraged students to think creatively and promote this year’s CCEW theme, The Curious Chemistry of Amazing Algae. Students from area schools were invited to submit their creative works to be judged according to the ACS rubric that focused on poem message, creativity, artistic merit, and neatness. The first place winner from the local section in each grade category moved to the national level of competition, judged by the ACS.

This year, students from Toni Mervine’s class at Rootstown Middle School submitted creative and delightful poems in the Grades 6-8 category. First, second, and third place winners were selected and awarded Amazon eGift cards. The participating class was rewarded with a pizza party.

The first, second, and third place winning entries are shown below. Winners of the national competition will be announced in May on www.acs.org.

Ava-Elizabeth Bell, First Place 6th Grade
Martin Zhang, Second Place, 6th Grade
Adelaide Morris, Third Place, 6th Grade
