The Akron Section of the ACS hosted an illustrated poem contest in celebration of Earth Week that encouraged students to think creatively and promote this year’s CCEW theme, The Buzz About Bugs: Insect Chemistry. Students from area schools were invited to submit their creative works to be judged according to the ACS rubric that focused on poem message, creativity, artistic merit, and neatness. The first place winner from the local section in each grade category moved to the national level of competition, judged by the ACS.
This year, students from Rootstown Middle School and Old Trail School submitted creative and delightful poems in the Grades 6-8 category. First, second, and third place winners were selected and awarded Amazon eGift cards. Students who submitted a poem received a certificate of participation from the Akron Section. The school with the most entries will receive a gift card for a pizza party.
Winners of the national competition will be announced in May on www.acs.org.
